On May 21, 2024, the McLaren F1 team announced the debut of a special edition one-off race car livery inspired by the late driver Ayrton Senna at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2024.
The “McLaren SENNA” will be presented by OKX and Senna Global.
The “OKX presents McLaren SENNA” event is a collaboration between McLaren Racing, their official partner OKX, and Senna Global. It aims to celebrate the racing legend of Ayrton Senna. As it marks the 30th anniversary of Senna’s passing, this livery not only pays tribute to him but also commemorates his legendary life and his impact on McLaren and F1 racing. The livery is inspired by Senna’s iconic helmet colors, featuring vibrant yellow, green, and blue, and will be showcased on the MCL38 race car throughout the Monaco Grand Prix weekend in 2024.
Senna raced for the McLaren F1 team from 1988 to 1993 and was the most successful driver for the team. He won a total of 41 Grand Prix races, with 35 of them while driving for McLaren. He also won three World Championships as a driver, and the team won the Constructors’ Championship four times. Senna had a deep connection with Monaco and was known as the “King of Monaco,” winning six times at the Monaco Grand Prix, including a remarkable five consecutive victories from 1989 to 1993. Therefore, the symbolic Circuit de Monaco is the perfect choice for McLaren to commemorate Senna.
McLaren Automotive also unveiled a limited-edition McLaren Senna road car as a tribute to Senna’s legendary story. This custom edition, named “Senna Sempre,” incorporates design elements similar to the F1 livery and complements it. The car livery is designed and hand-painted by McLaren Special Operations, taking inspiration from Senna’s helmet colors and incorporating the yellow, green, and blue hues, as well as featuring Senna’s pixelated portrait and other related elements.
During the race, the McLaren team will also wear race suits inspired by Senna, with both drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri donning custom-made race suits. Fans can also show their support and be part of the event by purchasing a range of custom merchandise featuring the colors of Senna’s era and the McLaren team livery. The “Senna X Monaco” collection will be available at McLaren stores. Since becoming the principal partner of the McLaren F1 team, leading virtual asset exchange and Web3 technology company OKX has been committed to enhancing the global fan experience and providing innovative projects and products to increase fan engagement. OKX will continue to work alongside the McLaren F1 team and bring more projects such as the limited-edition “Stealth Mode” livery design launched at the Singapore Grand Prix or this special commemorative event honoring Senna.
The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix will take place from May 24 to May 26 at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo.
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said, “The team is honored to commemorate and celebrate the extraordinary life and racing legacy of Ayrton Senna through this livery. Senna is still regarded as one of the greatest idols in the world of F1 racing and the most successful driver in McLaren’s history. His incredible achievements, contributions to the team, and enduring legacy have had a profound impact on McLaren. Therefore, we are proud to race with the green, yellow, and blue colors that symbolize him on the circuit where we witnessed his most outstanding performances.”
Haider Rafique, Chief Marketing Officer of OKX, stated, “Our involvement in designing the Senna livery for the Monaco Grand Prix is not only a tribute to Senna but also a celebration of his legendary story and his profound impact on the world of racing and McLaren. Senna has inspired a whole generation, and OKX hopes to educate the younger generation about his legendary story. Through participating in this event, we aim to honor Senna’s legacy in a vibrant and lively way, together with fans and participants.”
Bianca from SennaGlobal said, “We are honored to collaborate with McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive to launch these liveries commemorating Senna. Displaying his iconic colors on racing cars and road cars is a fantastic way to honor Senna’s life and legend. Senna’s connection with McLaren is significant, and together, they achieved many remarkable accomplishments that are still remembered by the public. The Monaco circuit holds many happy memories and championship victories for Senna, so seeing the Senna livery on a race car at the Monaco Grand Prix is truly meaningful.”
